Kevin Thomsen grew up in Marquette, MI graduating from MSHS in 1998. Kevin's love for athletics and helping others was established working at his family's iconic sport shop, Johnson's. Kevin graduated with his Bachelors from NMU in 2004. In 2015 he decided to branch out and open Queen City Running Company. So what is his happy pace? Running of course, you can constantly find Kevin running the trails and bike path around Marquette. He has to stay on his game to keep up with his blessings, daughters Anna and Aili, son Charlie, and his dachshund Coco Puff.
John joined QCRC after a 45 year career as owner and operator of the iconic Johnson's Sports Center in Marquette. John is truly one of the best, and believes in good customer service. With his wealth of experience and knowledge John takes much pride in going above and beyond to find the perfect fit for his customers. When John is not at the shop you can find him out for a long walk, rain or shine, along the bike path with his wife Sandy, dog Taffey, and possibly one of his grandchildren. He loves local sports and can be heard in the morning on his daily radio sports talk show or in the evening broadcasting from a local hockey, basketball, baseball, or football game. Stop by and say to John anytime, he loves see all of his old customers and familiar faces!
Alex Dennis, originally from Whitehall, Michigan, ran his first race at the age of four. Almost two decades later, he enjoys distances ranging from the 5k to the marathon. After running cross country and track during high school, Alex continued his running career at Vassar College before transferring to Northern Michigan University to major in Philosophy and English. He has ran two marathons, qualifying for Boston in the spring of 2019. In his free time Alex also enjoys biking, reading, and hiking. Alex’s life of endurance activities makes him a great addition to the shop.
Originally from Wyoming, Minnesota, Leo found his second home in Marquette four years ago when he began studying at Northern Michigan University. Along with pursuing his academic goals at NMU, Leo was offered a position on NMU's Nordic Skiing program to pursue his athletic goals. Along with skiing, Leo grew up running cross country and track, which ignited his passion for being outdoors and being active. Leo will graduate with his Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science in May and plans to start his Master's degree in the same field in the fall while using his last year of skiing eligibility. Outside of skiing and running, he enjoys spending time with friends, traveling, and enjoying a nice cup of coffee. Leo's knowledge from the classroom and his active lifestyle makes him a great fit at QCRC.
Anne graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2018 with her MA in English, concentrating in creative writing. Marquette warmed it's way into her heart and so she decided to hang out for a little longer in the beautiful and usually cold U.P. She is originally from Dearborn, MI, just outside of Detroit and came up to Marquette in 2016. She ran cross country and track at Wayne State University in Detroit and ran one season of track for Northern Michigan University. She ran the Marquette Half Marathon in 2017 and the Detroit Marathon in 2018 and is now hooked on both race distances. When not at the store, she can usually be found running, hiking, writing, painting, or geeking out about history.
PAIGE DU BOIS
Originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin, Paige attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, achieving All-American status in Track and Field before transferring to NMU in the fall of 2018. She now competes for both the Cross Country and Track and Field teams having specialities in the 400 and 800 meters. She is going into her senior year at NMU majoring in Psychology with a minor in physical education and coaching. Following graduation in May, she plans to pursue further education to obtain her doctorate degree in the field of Sport Psychology and begin coaching. Once her college eligibility is done, she plans to pursue trail ultramarathons. Outside of running, Paige enjoys traveling, hiking, and reading a book with a good cup of coffee.
Neal began his running career in 2011 and has primarily focused on the marathon distance, with shorter events being incorporated as training. In the fall of 2013 Neal earned the Distance Run Coach Certification through the Road Runners Club of America, and in the winter of 2014 he completed the Certified Personal Training certificate through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Neal stays active in the local running community and runs with the Muffin Runners and Marquette Trail Series. He has helped race committees plan their events and volunteers whenever the opportunity is available. He is currently the race chief for the Marquette Trail 50 ultra-marathon relay.
